CORE VALUES:
Lordship
of Christ – We acknowledge Christ, the source of our salvation
and the head of the Church, and strive to submit ourselves and all we do
to His authority and His Word.
Godly
Leadership – We are committed to pastoral and lay leadership which
promotes the integrity and holiness set forth in God’s Word through teaching,
modeling and loving accountability.
Prayer
– Recognizing our complete dependence on God for all things and especially
for our spiritual lives and effective ministry, we commit ourselves individually
and corporately to frequent and consistent prayer in seeking His wisdom,
direction and power.
Praise
& Worship – In recognition of God’s holiness, love and worthiness,
we are committed to promoting worship and praise of Him through singing,
music and personal testimony.
Teamwork
– Knowing that working together in unity is pleasing to God and reveals
Christ to a lost world, we strive for unity and teamwork through everyone
discovering and applying their gifts in ministry encouraging people to
serve Christ from hearts of love and gratitude.
Discipleship
– We recognize every Christian is to encourage others in their relationship
with God. Therefore, we are committed to assist each other in learning
and practically applying God’s word to our lives.
Evangelism–
We believe God’s heart breaks for lost people and that all are lost who
are not forgiven and made righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore,
we are committed to preparing ourselves and sharing the gospel in as creative,
excellent and relevant way as possible.
Family
Oriented – Recognizing there is a crisis in the American family,
we are committed to creating an atmosphere which strengthens marriages
and families.
Compassionate
– Since God is love, we believe love should be our most distinguishing
characteristic. Therefore, though we will not excuse or condone sin, we
will strive to extend grace, care and genuine love to all people in both
word and action.
Missions
– Since Christ has commissioned all of us to make disciples of people of
all nations, we believe we have the obligation and privilege of helping
take the gospel message not only to our own community but to the whole
world. We will support foreign missions financially, with prayer and other
personal involvement.
OUR
MISSION is taken from both
the Great Commission and the Great Commandment:
Matt.
28:19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I
am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matt.
22:37-40 "Jesus replied: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first
and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor
as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
Our
Mission is to be a praying church used of God in sharing the gospel and leading
people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
OUR
VISION. Before
describing our vision we must first speak of our
Core Values and Mission. Core Values define those things that must
remain, or become, central to us as a church body, and on which we refuse
to compromise. Our Mission Statement expresses, in our own words,
what we are to be doing as defined by the Great Commission and the Great
Commandment. Our mission will never change, because it is defined by God,
but how we express it may.
Our
Vision is a picture of the future when our Core Values and Mission
are fully implemented, not what presently exists. It could be described
as a dream of what will be, but it is more than that, it is a picture of
what we believe God plans for us to become and therefore what we must become,
by His help. Scripture says “Where there is no vision the people perish”.
Vision simply gives a clear picture of the future, how this picture will
become a reality will be defined by the strategic plan. We envision Spokane
Valley Wesleyan Church becoming a strong influential church in the Spokane
area by 2010, through the enthusiastic involvement of its many members.
The following describes what this picture looks like:
Inspiring
worship and loving acceptance. We envision a church with dynamic
weekly worship. Visitors will be enthusiastically and warmly greeted and
shown the location of appropriate facilities. Careful follow-up of visitors
will occur with each receiving several caring contacts from different people
in the days following their visit, through personal visits, phone calls
and letters. The worship music will be a blend of traditional and
contemporary. The service will be well planned and implemented, but
always sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Excellence will be
strived for, but the main objective will be to bring people into the presence
of God, with success being defined as meeting with God, resulting in transformed
lives. Skits, testimonies, video clips, and other means will be used
in conjunction with preaching the Word to accomplish this.
Reaching
the un-churched. We envision our church intentionally reaching
the un-churched in two general manners. The first is to focus our
efforts geographically on the area close to the church, with the main focus
being east of the church and including the Riverwalk development to the
north and the Turtle Creek development to the south. The second is
to reach out through our personal relationships, to family, friends, neighbors,
and other acquaintances. This outreach will involve the ministries
of the church including, Sunday Worship services, small groups, kids and
youth ministries as well as special outreach events.
Kingdom
mindset. We envision being a church which does not see other
evangelical churches as competitors but as fellow workers in God’s Kingdom.
We will cooperate with other churches toward Kingdom goals as appropriate
and use the most effective means to expand the Kingdom, refusing to put
our own congregational growth above the growth of God’s Kingdom.
We envision planting at least one additional Wesleyan Church in the Spokane
area by 2010.
We
also envision continuing our present support of 10% of our General Fund
income toward missions and expanding our missions emphasis with a yearly
missions conference and sending short term missions teams from our church.
Effective
discipleship. We envision developing all our people, both new
believers as well as established believers, into fully devoted and ministering
followers of Christ, through a well organized discipleship program.
This program will provide teaching and training of well defined courses
for each stage of a person’s development, from non-Christians to those
fully committed and prepared for ministry. This discipleship program will
provide an encouraging atmosphere for spiritual growth through a logical
sequence of training and ministry involvement. Success of this discipleship
program will not be defined by simply imparting knowledge, but by people
becoming involved in ministry themselves.
Ministry
to kids and youth. In view of the statistics that most Christians
come to Christ before age 18 and that the percentage of the younger generations
coming to Christ has dropped drastically, we will be a church which prioritizes
reaching these generations. We envision dynamic, growing kids and youth
ministries which provide both wholesome fun and the message of the gospel.
Genuine relationships will be developed with un-churched kids and teens,
as well as those with a solid Christian foundation. Our Kid’s Club
and Youth Group will attend our District Camps and the youth will participate
in mission’s trips. Our goal will be to have youth whose lives have
been transformed into fully committed followers of Christ. Some of
the youth will attend our Wesleyan Colleges each year with some entering
into full time ministry. The Kid’s Club will provide a continuous
source of new youth entering into the Youth Group as they reach youth age.
Practical
Christian living. We envision adults of all ages being involved in small
groups for the purpose of practically carrying out the six purposes of
the church; Prayer, Fellowship, Evangelism, Worship, Discipleship, and
Service. Although many of these purposes are involved with other
ministries of the church, it is recognized that the closer relationships
associated with small groups provide a setting where all participants can
most effectively minister, and be ministered to, in ways clearly described
in scripture. As needed, and as the Lord leads, groups will be started
in special areas of need, such as; recovery groups, marriage enrichment,
parenting, finances, etc. Our goal will be to involve every person
in the church in a small group.
Ministry
facilities. We recognize facilities are not a goal but a means to a
goal. We envision facilities expanded to properly accommodate the
increased ministries of the church, including adequate worship space for
the enlarged congregation and also proper facilities for the youth and
kids ministries. These facilities will be nice, but cost effective,
designed with multipurpose use in mind, i.e. gym, fellowship hall, Sunday
School, after school care, recovery groups, etc. |
